Mattel Announces Monster High SDCC 2012 Exclusive!
Scarah Screams is the official San Diego Comic con (SDCC) 2012 exclusive Monster High doll!
Now that it’s announced, I have to admit, it seems like an obvious choice. If you recall, Scarah was originally displayed at SDCC 2011, along with two other dolls, the Headless Headmistress and the daughter of Arachne. Mattel asked fans to choose their favorite of the three and Scarah won. Since the contest took place at SDCC, it just make sense that she’d become an SDCC exclusive!
I’m on the fence with my thoughts on this exclusive. Personally, I think the Headless Headmistress would be a much cooler doll to purchase. Scarah is cute, but not exactly as awe inspiring as the original black and white Frankie from 2010.
There are four ways you can get this doll.
1- Attend SDCC, run to the Mattel booth as quickly as your legs can take you, and hope and pray that you’ll eventually get in a line to purchase her. (Emphasis on ‘hope and pray’! The lines at SDCC are *always* a mess and half the time, standing in line for hours doesn’t work in your favor!)
2- Pre-purchase the doll on MattyCollector and pick her up at-con. This option only works if you are attending the convention. Rules can be found by following this link.
3-Pre-order her on eBay for the best price possible pre-con. In past years, I’ve never spent more than $50.00 for the exclusive.
4-Hope and pray (yeah, that again!) that MattyCollector receives a small shipment to sell post-con. Last year, you could easily get the 2011 Ghoulia on MattyCollector at convention pricing ($20.00) for days before she sold out. This is the route I think I’ll be going this year.

C2E2 2012 Goodies
Friday, I attended the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (C2E2). I’m not a huge ‘comic’ person, but usually these conventions are filled with pop culture/entertainment and those elements are my cup of tea! As I only had a Friday pass, I missed most of the celebrity guests on the playbill, however, I did score a few fun buys and attend a few entertaining programs. While this post isn’t exactly about dolls, I thought you might be interested in hearing a bit about it!
The day started off with a program hosted by the creators of the webcomic ‘Unshelved’, Gene Ambaum and Bill Barnes. It was one of the more entertaining convention programs I’ve been to. Gene and Bill talked about how they got started, how certain strips came about, and even talked about some of the strips that didn’t work out as intended. If you’ve ever worked at a library or even a job heavily based around books and customer service, check out ‘Unshelved’.
I also attended two ‘professional development’ type panels. One of the panels was hosted by an entertainment lawyer who spoke about how to protect your ideas through copyright and trademarking. The other panel was hosted by a TV writer who let us in on how he got his start and his current projects. Both of these were interesting programs.
The dealers hall was as expected. It had fewer ‘comic’ vendors aka vendors who’s booths are filled with cardboard boxes filled with single issue comics, a good number of ‘toy’ vendors, and (thankfully) a surprising amount of ‘unique’ vendors, selling cool Star Wars purses or fantastic looking, steampunk hats.
The artist alley was fantastic. First off, it was huge, as in it could take you a good hour to see everything the artists had. Second, it was filled with a large number of amazing artists. And let’s not forget that the unique works of art each artist offers up are far better priced than anything you’ll find in the dealers hall!
Like all my past convention experiences, I left with my bags a little heavier than when they arrived. My shoulder may be in a little pain today, but all in all, it was worth it.
The super big My Little Pony bag was free with a purchase from the WeLoveFine booth. The bag is very similar to the ones handed out by Warner Bros. and most recently BBC America at San Diego Comic Con. I purchased this shirt from WeLoveFine. It isn’t very often that two of my obsessions collide like this (Doctor Who/My Little Pony). I was very tempted to get one of their Jem and the Holograms tee’s, too, but wanted to try the company out before buying a ton.
This Doctor Who Fob Watch is a reproduction of the one used in Series 3 of new ‘Who’. I over paid by $5.00-10.00, but it’s a neat toy and a working fob watch. It will come in handy if I ever need to be ‘steampunk’.
Newsie’s is my favorite movie and if I ever see any of the actors, you know I’ll be getting this one sheet signed! Also, pictured is an Avatar: The Last Airbender promo print and a Spider-man print.
This is my purchase from the artist alley. You may have seen this image on Deviant Art before… If I were rich, I would have ended up with a print from Crystal Aura Wilson, Garth Cameron Graham, and loads of other talented artists!
All in all, C2E2 made for a great way to spend the day. I feel like we (my mom and I) did a good job at experiencing both the programming end of things, as well as the vendors area. If you are in the Chicagoland area and like pop culture, toys, and comics, you might want to check out the C2E2 website and add it to your calendar for 2013!
Tonner Announces c2e2 Exclusive!
Tonner announced recently that the Huntress Deluxe is going to be exclusive to the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo (c2e2)!
Fully authorized by DC Comics, the Huntress is limited to 200 pieces and will be available for pick up at Tonner’s booth (425) for $150.00. The certificate of authenticity will be HAND SIGNED by the man himself, Robert Tonner.
While superhero dolls aren’t my thing, I suggest picking this up as soon as you can!
Toy Fair starts February 14!
Toy Fair, the convention for those in the toy making industry to show off their wares for 2010, starts on February 14th and runs through the 17th in New York City.
While I am not attending, I know there should be a lot of news rolling in from attendees next week!
If you are attending Toy Fair and don’t mind sharing your pictures or writing a report on your trip, leave a comment!
IDEX Links
IDEX is over and attendees are coming home and posting their pictures! Here are a few of the links I’ve found!
Terri Gold posted pictures HERE on her doll blog. She got some really nice shots of everything I would have wanted to see had I attended. Notice that a new TOFFEE doll is pictured! That means they’re still making dolls (and just haven’t figured out how to release them on time *sigh*).
Baby doll collectors will find photos HERE.
More Baby doll pictures HERE.
Ellowyne dolls are HERE. Some great shots of a doll line I really want to add to my collection one day.
They Never Grow Up Nursery posted pictures and some text about her trip to IDEX HERE.
AngelicDreamz posted pictures on their Flickr HERE.
Seems like I missed quite a show! Maybe next year…
IDEX Starts Today!
While I’m not attending IDEX this year, be on the look out for IDEX related posts! I’ll be searching high and low for information, photos, and fun facts about the convention!
For all those attending, have fun! If you’d like to share photo’s or a story with Dolly Confessions, leave a link in the comment section!
Conventions, Oh My!
One of my favorite things is attending large conventions. Although I have never had the chance to attend a real doll convention, I have gone to my fair share of anime and scifi cons. My mother actually got to attend the Barbie Convention when it was in Chicago a while back. She had a ball. Next time, I’m going along!
Anyway, the purpose of this post is to spotlight a few 2010 doll conventions. If you are running or attending a show that isn’t listed, leave a comment and I’ll add it to the post.
IDEX Trade Show– A World of Quality Collectibles and Playthings
Location: Orlando, FL
Date: January 28-31, 2010
About the Con: IDEX boasts exhibitors from most major doll companies, including Alexander Doll Co. Inc, Berdine Creedy Originals Inc, Goodreau, Huckleberry Toys, JUN Planning USA, Maggie Made Dolls, and more.
The Dealers hall sounds phenomenal with vendors such as The Doll Peddler, Denver Doll Emporium, and Facets by Marcia.
Antinque Collectable Doll and Toy Show
Location: St. Charles, IL
Date: April 24, 2010
About the Show: Located on the Kane County Fairgrounds, this is purely a sale. Walking the fair could take a few hours and I recommend getting there when the show opens to find the best deals. If it’s raining, bring an umbrella. The buildings are dry, but you’ll still need to walk outside to get to each building!
Location: Lombard, IL
Date: May 20-23, 2010
About the Con: So far in advance, I hesitate to write much here, but from all accounts I’ve read, this convention seems perfect for any Gene or Tonner collector.
Puddle- Pullip Doll Convention
Location: Elk Grove Village, IL
Date: June 5th, 2010
About this Con: This convention is limited to 100 people and is in its 3rd year. Inexpensively priced, it seems like a fun day trip for those who like Pullips, Dal’s, and other asian type dolls.
National Barbie Doll Collectors Convention
Location: Cleveland, OH
Date: July 21-23, 2010
About the Con: So much fun! My mom attended a few years ago and had a blast. This years theme is ‘Barbie and the Rockers’ which is sure to be out of this world!
Location: Manchester, NH
Date: September 24-26, 2010
About the Con: Set your sails for adventure with this convention celebrating the 25th anniversary of Jem and the Holograms. I attended this show when it was in Chicago a few years back and, while it was definitely in its infancy, I had a really good time. Jemcon has a good mix of special guests, raffles, programs, and a nice dealers room perfect for any Holograms or Misfits fan!
Modern Doll Collecters Convention
Location: Winston-Salem, NC
Date: September 29- October 02, 2010
About this Con: I don’t know much about this con, but the souvenir doll is being made by Wilde Imagination, Inc, so I’m sure it should be fantastic!
