Mattel’s Take on Katniss

It was recently announced that Katniss, main character in Suzanne Collin’s popular Hunger Games book series and now blockbuster movie, would be getting the Barbie treatment!  Mattel made big money off of the Twilight phenomenon and it looks like they’ve gone even further with Hunger Games. Mattel did well in hiring designer Bill Greening to design Katniss, the doll.

According to EW, “I am a huge Hunger Games fan and loved all three books, so it was truly an amazing experience for me to be able to design the Katniss Barbie doll,” Greening says. “I think it really pays tribute to Katniss and The Hunger Games.”

I have to say, if these promo shots are good representations of the final product, Greening succeeded in his quest to make an awesome looking doll.

Instead of having Katniss look like a brunette Barbie, Mattel and Bill Greening, has crafted a superb look for this doll.  I love her facemold, love the eyes, and love, love, love, that they kept the face paint low key.  Also, is it me or is this doll sporting freckles?  I’m a sucker for freckles on dolls.  Oh, and the simple side braid?  Love it.

The outfit looks fantastic.  If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll recognize this look as Katniss’ Hunger Games garb.  I’m so happy they chose this look over her reaping or ‘girl on fire’ costume.  The real story in the Hunger Games is about the games themselves, so this outfit is much more fitting than any other costumes from the movie!  The accessories are a nice touch and include a bow and arrow set and the ever elusive Mockingjay pin!

The body looks to be jointed or, at the very least, her wrists are jointed.  It would make sense to give this doll a jointed body, because you know people will be using it for photoshoots eventually and it’s much easier to pose a doll when they have a little mobility!

You can currently pre-order this doll on Barbie Collector. Katniss hits stores in August 2012 and I predict that she’ll be pretty popular with doll collectors and fans of Hunger Games alike.

What do you think of this doll?  Like the interpretation?  Who should be next in the Hunger Games doll line?  Share your opinion with a comment or two!
