Toy Fair 2015- Cabbage Patch Kids

Recently, it was announced that Wicked Cool Toys had taken on Cabbage Patch Kids.  During Toy Fair 2015, they hosted a special blogger event.  I suspect it was for ‘Mommy Bloggers’, but I was invited, as well!  During the event, the co-president of Wicked Cool Toys gave us a tour around the showroom and a glimpse into what is around the bend for one of my favorite childhood doll lines, Cabbage Patch Kids.

Wicked Cool Toys has many plans for their first season with this iconic doll brand.  While their Cabbage Patch Kids will still be fashionably dressed, Wicked Cool Toys is hoping to play on and enhance the nurturing element of the line.

You’ll see this most directly with the basic Cabbage Patch Kids line.  Each Cabbage Patch Kid will come with a key.  That key will help them unlock the heart collar on an Adoptimal, a scaled plush pet of their very own (sold separately).  (Sidenote: The blondie in the picture above is my absolute favorite Cabbage Patch Kids on display!)

The Cabbage Patch Kids Babies have had a slight redesign, as well. Their faces are fresh and spunky looking. They will come with a pacifier and blanket.  Wicked Cool Toys is releasing a line of accessories for them, as well.

Now, the two most exciting reveals:  First, the Classic Kids are here to stay!  I love the ‘classic’ Cabbage Patch Kids and relate to them the most.  The fact that they’re not going to be forgotten in this rebranding of the line is fantastic news.

This last bit of news from the presentation is what excites me the most about this relaunch of the line and I think it will excite you, too!  Throughout 2015, Toys R Us will have special Cabbage Patch Kids Days, where a ‘Big Kid‘ will be sold exclusively on that day and then retired.

The Big Kids are adorable and are on a whole different level than the traditional Cabbage Patch Kids.  They’re 18″ tall, the tallest of any Cabbage Patch Kid made in the past 30 years, made of vinyl and will come in a limited run of 1,000 or 2,000 (subject to change). The big kid they showed us at Toy Fair was named Marisol.  She was adorable!

The big picture behind these Big Kids is to bring back the ‘it’ factor that Cabbage Patch Kids had when they first hit stores in 1983.  Releasing special, limited edition Cabbage Patch Kids is a great way to go about finding that magic again, I think!

Wicked Cool Toys is bringing innovations to the line, as well, with this Dancing Toddler.  Not only does she dance around the room, but she also sings “I Feel Good”.

I left the presentation knowing that Wicked Cool Toys would put a lot of effort into making Cabbage Patch Kids relevant again.  Their passion for the product was clearly on display at Toy Fair and I think they’ll do a great job re-energizing this classic doll line.

UPDATE: I asked about the CPK releases in the UK and most of the lines should be available overseas.  However, the limited edition Big Kids are currently US only releases.

What do you think of Wicked Cool Toys take on Cabbage Patch Kids? Is there anything you’re looking forward to seeing? Share your thoughts below!

I love this! For the first time in somewhere over thirty years, I am actually considering buying a CPK now 🙂 like you, I really like the blonde doll with the cat’s eye glasses, she’s gorgeous. I’m not sure about the “big kids”, but I’ve got a feeling they might grow on me. Thanks!

It will be interesting to see what they do overseas with the Big Kids. I wonder if you’ll get the same ones as us or if you’ll get UK exclusives?

Do you know when the 18″ kids will become available at Toys R Us? I would love to own one. I still have my original CPK from when the mad rush when first released. Yes I was a fan of CPK.

I know I answered this on facebook, but in case anyone else was wondering… All I know right now is that there will be three CPK days throughout 2015. I’ll pass on the exact dates when I learn more!

CPKs should not lose their value-1983’s & unusual CPKs should retain the value one pd. for them back in the 80’s especially. I wrote 2 books about them, & dealt with them for several years-it is sad to see the brand has lost value…I hope continued effort to produce them might change that-it is a viable hobby. Supply & demand will change the collectible value…new collectors should look for older dolls & help us revitalize the hobby.

The new CPK are going to be available only in USA or the company will sell to Europe as well ?

Most of the lines will be available overseas. The Big Kids are US only right now.

Cabbage Patch has released 20″ dolls at Toys R Us exclusively for a span of five years about a decade ago. Babyland General Hospital sells 20″ dolls as an exclusive on their website. So it isn’t the biggest release ever. I am very saddened that they are trying to start a “craze” again. People have been seriously injured in such crushes in the past and it brings out the worst in people.
